Dave Abbott AKA Epic McDave made this film which unfortunately couldn’t get shown at the third screening, due to the sheer volume of movies that ended up getting made. However, I think it’s brilliant, and it’s definitely going to end up being shown at the next Filmonik night at the Deaf Institute.

*emerges from the depths of sleep*

Hells, people, the Kabaret’s over! But I’ve still got stacks of footage to edit and will be hunting down the films that were shown. Not to mention that this is the Filmonik blog, not the Kabaret blog, so keep watching this space for more information about what’s happening in the local film scene in Manchester.

First up, # F M L by Alice Brockway, which was first shown at screening number three.

Kabaret takes its toll

Joe Stacey’s been a trooper, hanging around all night, helping with the beer runs, providing moral support to Ben Edmundson as he tries to edit two films in 15 hours (lessons will be learned about biting off more than one can chew, I suspect.) But all that hard work has left the kid plum tuckered out, and he seems to have passed out in an undignified heap up against the wall.
Being the compassionate souls that we are, our first response was, of course, to laugh and take pictures. And the second response was to post them on the internet.

I bet Joe will love it when he finds out we did this! Good times.

Steve Balshaw

OK, so the “60 second interviews” haven’t actually been 60 seconds long so far, and this one definitely isn’t. But Steve Balshaw, the power behind the Kabaret, is an interesting enough guy that I’m sure none of you are going to mind.

Karma Bank

Steve Ireland and Una Love are two of our first-time Kabaret attendees. Not only that, they’re first-time filmmakers. Karma bank is Steve’s directorial debut. Shot in four hours, edited in a day (true Kabaret style!), it has a few sound issues but overall it’s a cracking little first movie.

First shown at Screening Two, Steve said that if you’d have told him a week ago that not only would he have directed a film but that it would be shown at the Cornerhouse he’d never have believed you, but nonetheless that’s what happened.

We look forward to see what these guys will be doing in the future!

Yesterday night Fiona Ledgard from Manchester’s All FM (96.9 FM) came round to interview some of the Kabaret attendees.

Fiona is the host of the Anything Goes Breakfast Show on Thursdays from 9-10am, and the Anything Goes Evening Show on London’s Recharged Radio from 10-11pm on Tuesdays, which you can listen to on the mighty internet, either live or via their listen again facility.

So tune in and find out what the kabaret people sound like when someone from the radio sticks a mic in their face and gets them to talk about themselves!

In the case of Tamasin McCarthy, you climb inside a cardboard box and record the voiceover for your film in there.
